6 x Cuvée des Drilles, Domaine d'Escausses 2014
What can we say about this wine? Cuvée des Drilles has been a stalwart go-to light red on the Gauthier Soho wine list for five years now, which makes it the first of our new 'Gauthier List Classics'.
For the money, we think it's simply unbeatable - less than £10 for such a classic, light, easy smooth Gaillac red wine is one of the bargains of the London wine scene at the moment. Now available again for a short period at Gauthier Wines.
From the region of Gaillac in South West of France, Cuvée des Drilles is a medium bodied red wine, it has black cherry, mineral, earthy with a touch of black pepper notes. Tannins are very soft with a beautiful fragrance and very vibrant finish.
The Gamay (found in Beaujolais) brings the fragrance and acidity, the Braucol and Duras bring the spicy, earthy notes.
The acidity in this wine is needed when matched with fatty meat, while the spicy and earthy notes can recall the flavours of a roast.
It is fantastic with old spot pork, creamed spinach and bitter orange or fish dishes such as halibut, cod, sea bass or plaice.
Currently listed at Columbia Road favourite Brawn, Galvin brothers' Bistrot de Luxe, Jason Atherton's Little Social, French Master Cheesemongers Androuet & Covent Garden wine specialist Terroir.
Cuvée des Drilles is currently served at Gauthier Soho with our lunch menu.
