A superb 100% Viognier from Henri Nordoc in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Having grown up in Avignon, I had always assumed that the rather sophisticated and sought-after Viognier was the exclusivity of the world famous Chateau Grillet in the north part of Cotes du Rhone.
Thankfully, when I started to travel, I realised that Viognier could shine and create some amazing wines outside the north of the Rhone Valley.
Here is a perfect example where in Languedoc, Viognier is slightly rounder with less acidity. As summer arrives, it pairs with the best Provencal cooking has to offer: Aubergine caviar; warm ratatouille; stuffed tomatoes or even on its own as an aperitif.

Viognier is a white-wine grape variety known for producing textural, aromatic wines with pronounced stonefruit flavors; 'apricots and steel' are the variety's classic flavor associations. On the nose, Viognier wines can also be very herbal, with aromas of chamomile, lavender, thyme and even a hint of pine. In aged examples and sweeter styles, this potentially overpowering herbality is softened by honeyed notes.
Good fact: In the late 1960s just 40 acres (16ha) of Viognier vines were all that remained in the world, located exclusively in the vineyards of Condrieu and Chateau-Grillet.
